Master class on embroidering paintings “The perfect wrong side. Cross stitch: master class for beginners How to learn cross stitch for beginners step by step: preparatory stage

Cross-stitch- this is a very entertaining activity, although it is labor-intensive and requires patience. , like any creative activity, requires a lot of time and you need to give it your all. But you shouldn’t force yourself to do it, because this is a voluntary matter and it should bring joy not only from the finished work, but also from the process itself. It’s so wonderful to create something with your own hands. Embroidery is a type of needlework that will delight your eye for many years to come, thereby creating comfort and beauty in your home. Anyone who does beadwork or other needlework knows why he likes this activity so much. The thing is that beauty is gradually born before your own eyes and a feeling of satisfaction and joy comes, especially if the work was difficult and long.

Now in any store you can buy everything for embroidery. What might you need for embroidery? First, you will need embroidery fabric; you can buy it in almost every handicraft store. After which you will need to buy a set of needles, a hoop, and scissors (if you don’t have them). Many people use beads and rhinestones, and sometimes buttons, in embroidery, so you shouldn’t limit yourself to just threads; a few bright details won’t harm your work. But just don't overdo it. Then you must decide on the picture, that is, on the pattern for embroidery, choose it to your taste. And after we have acquired all of the above, we move on to the most difficult thing, this is the selection of floss threads.

On the one hand, it’s convenient when you buy ready-made sets; the fabric with the pattern you like comes with a needle, thread, and instructions on how to how to cross stitch. But if you bought the fabric separately and the design on paper and not on the fabric, then you have to stand for a long time and pick up the threads. After all, you want the picture to look beautiful, and not to be made “out of the blue.” But if you don’t want to spend a lot of time selecting threads, then it’s better to immediately buy ready-made sets, or you can buy cross stitch patterns, on which the colors are marked and under each color there is a number that corresponds to the thread number. Even if you can’t choose it yourself, you can always ask the seller for advice.

What should you do if you can’t find a suitable picture for your interior? Want to find free embroidery? If stores sell only banal and boring pictures, and there is nothing that you like, then don’t be upset. There is a program called PCStitch Pro that can help you. This program has great capabilities, and it can greatly make your life easier by reducing your actions to a minimum. You just need to upload the image into the program and you will succeed free embroidery pattern together with the color palette and thread codes. Using this program, you get professional embroidery, which is sold in specialized stores. Also, using this program you can print the diagram directly. If we describe this program in a nutshell, then these two words would be “very convenient.”
I wish everyone good luck in their endeavors!

Many people believe that cross stitch is a common hobby that does not require special skills. This opinion can be refuted, since embroidery is an art. Like all types of art, it requires diligence, perseverance, and concentration. Beginning needlewomen can learn embroidery techniques on the Internet. Today on the Russian Internet you can find advice on where to start embroidering, a description of the process of completing the work and its correct completion. Cross stitch for beginners will help you step by step in understanding all the nuances of embroidery.

Today, manufacturers starting out as embroiderers offer a variety of kits that already contain all the necessary materials for needlework. The set includes canvas, embroidery pattern, and specially selected threads. This allows you to get started right away and not waste time on preparatory work.

Often experienced needlewomen select all the materials themselves. To do this, you need to have information about the types of fabric, threads and needles, and also draw up diagrams correctly.

Different embroideries suggest the use of different types of materials. Essentially, the embroidery kits are the same. Moreover, they include different types of fabric, threads and patterns.

Embroidery materials:

  • Canvas;
  • Hoop;
  • Floss;
  • Scissors.

Embroidery may also require additional accessories. Specialty stores sell felt-tip pens, boards, frame clips, etc. All these devices make the work of needlewomen easier.

How to learn cross stitch for beginners step by step: preparatory stage

An embroidery project requires additional preparation before its implementation. It is very important to follow all preparation rules, since their quality will affect the subsequent work process. You need to take care of the quality of fabric and threads, choose the right needles and even scissors.

It should be taken into account that it is better to wash embroidery fabric before starting work, since after washing the base may “shrink”.

It is also necessary to take into account that the edges of the fabric may fray and become frayed during work. They should be pre-treated with threads or glue. The best type of fabric for embroidery is canvas.

How to prepare step by step:

  • Scheme;
  • Textile;
  • Threads;
  • Preparation of additional materials.

All materials must be High Quality. The final result will depend on this. It is best to embroider using a hoop. They will help to properly stretch the fabric, which will allow you to make stitches easily and accurately.

Step-by-step steps: how to cross stitch for beginners

Beginning needlewomen should take into account that embroidery can be of different types. Sometimes the pattern can be applied directly to the fabric, then you can embroider directly according to the color design. More difficult is the process of transferring the drawing from the diagram.

If the drawing is applied to the diagram, you will need to understand its decoding. In them, each color has its own symbol, which allows you to choose the correct color of the thread.

Embroidery is done on canvas, which can be roughly divided into squares. The cross from the diagram is transferred to the square. You need to start embroidery with one color, sequentially embroidering cross after cross.

Step-by-step cross stitch:

  • Decide on the start of embroidery.
  • Select the appropriate thread color.
  • Fasten the thread in the needle and on the canvas.
  • Choose the correct direction of the thread and follow it.

Usually each kit contains instructions for embroidery. In it you can read in detail about where to start, what the sequence of work is and its completion. Before starting work, you should familiarize yourself with the types of seams.

Types of seams: what you need to know

Cross stitch can be done in different ways. As a result, the work will look similar, only the stitching method will be different. The instructions will tell you about the order of the threads.

There is a single rule for each method: the top stitches should face the same direction.

When making stitches, it is important to pay attention to the fact that if they are located close to each other, then the thread may not be cut. The thread can be pulled on the wrong side and covered with the following stitches. You should try to make sure that the wrong side consists of strictly horizontal or vertical rows.

Let's learn to distinguish between types of seams:

  • Double-sided cross;
  • Half-cross;
  • One fourth of the cross;
  • One eighth of the cross;
  • Three-quarters.

Very often, beginning needlewomen get nervous when they don’t get a stitch or it turns out incorrectly. In such cases, you should not rip the threads right away. Very often it is possible to correct errors without removing superimposed threads.

How to cross stitch correctly for beginners

Many experienced needlewomen use one embroidery method, the one they like. That is why embroiderers often argue about which technology is the best. Beginner needlewomen can be advised to try several techniques at once in order to understand which one is most convenient for them.

Any technique is subject to the rule of stitching: the top stitches should “look” in one direction.

To better understand the issue, experienced needlewomen advise watching a number of video tutorials. The stitching technique will vary depending on the design and the method of its implementation. However, every needlewoman must master two basic techniques.

Stitching methods:

  • English. The classic method, which involves applying a half-cross, then applying a second half-cross to the first.
  • Danish. Allows you to work with large drawings. It involves applying a row of half-crosses, followed by the application of the top row, which returns the embroiderer to the beginning of the embroidery.

It is better to master new techniques by performing small-sized drawings. If the design is colored, it is better to start embroidery with darker shades, gradually moving to light ones. Depending on the shape of the figure, different types of stitches are used.

Cross stitch rules for beginners

To make the work easy, but at the same time useful, beginning needlewomen are advised to use canvas with large squares. They will allow you to improve your skills and get practice in applying various types of stitches. The main thing is that the stitches are even and neat.

In order for the embroidery to turn out beautiful, the embroidery must be done sequentially. It doesn’t matter at all what embroidery technique is used.

For large canvases, two application techniques are often used: English and Danish. This makes it possible to apply horizontal and vertical rows in different areas. Advice for beginners - the first works should not contain more than 4 colors.

Before you begin, you need to make sure that all the necessary materials and tools are at hand. You can prepare the necessary palette of threads in advance so that, if necessary, choose suitable color. Once everything is ready, you can begin preparing the canvas.

For high-quality canvas tension, it is best to use a hoop. It is convenient to use a medium-sized hoop when working with fragments.

After the canvas is tightly stretched, you can proceed to determining the center of the pattern. This will help to correctly determine the proportions and outline the correct diagonals. Many needlewomen advise filling the canvas, starting from the center and moving towards the edge.

Embroidery rules:

  • You should always start work with the largest colored area.
  • It is better to start embroidery with dark shades.
  • Large embroidery is best filled in fragments.
  • As you embroider, you should cross out the finished sections on the diagram.
  • Make sure that the stitches are made in the same direction.

There is no need to be nervous during the work process. Even if something doesn’t work out, the main thing to remember is that mastery comes with experience. And an incorrectly executed stitch can always be redone. You can use sets for children. For clarity, you can start learning online, watch video lessons, find a master class on how to sew correctly and embroider a picture that you like. It is important to know where to download the diagram from, since not all of them are of high quality.

Cross stitch for beginners step by step: how to start

Different needlewomen start work in different ways. It all depends on personal preference and convenience. The most common ways to start are to stitch from the center and from the edge.

It is important to remember to attach the thread correctly. When starting to embroider, under no circumstances should the thread be tied into a knot.

You should also ensure the correct number of threads in the needle. There should always be an even number of them. To make the reverse look neat, the threads are secured under the embroidered crosses.

Tips for starting embroidery:

  • Fasten the thread correctly.
  • Decide on the type of stitches.
  • Thread the needle.

The work will be completed faster if the needlewoman works with both hands at once. The right hand should be on top, the left hand should be on bottom. Experienced needlewomen use double-sided needles, which speeds up the work process.

In this lesson we will tell you about where cross stitch actually begins. You will find answers to the questions: what is the structure of fabrics for embroidery; how to position the needle correctly; how to do a single cross. Let’s also try to embroider a small piece of fabric together.

Cross stitch has long been one of the most popular women's hobbies. At the same time, many handmakers believe that such embroidery is not the most creative activity. The scheme is there, the technology is simple and clear, the result is known in advance. In addition, there are thousands of cross stitch kits, and they have already cut the canvas with threads and put in a needle. But any embroiderer will tell you that creativity is the HOW, not the WHAT. Cross stitch is both a quest and a puzzle. Where to start, where and which way to go, how many colors to work with at the same time, should you take care of the perfect backside? And what embroidery has in common with puzzles is that special pleasure when a design begins to appear out of nowhere; No wonder many embroiderers take photographs of the stages of embroidery. The finished work may well not be particularly interesting to them: for example, after boasting about the result online and offline, I roll up the embroidered picture or put it in a folder and forget about it.

Sooner or later, working with ready-made sets becomes not as interesting as it used to be. Numerous embroidery patterns on the Internet, cross-stitch themed magazines, designs spotted from friends... And here we are faced with the need to independently choose everything that was received “on a silver platter” in the kit. The choice makes your head spin, and you want to find some kind of support point. Let's try to figure out what's what (and how not to spend the entire family budget).

Here is the “Everything for Handicrafts” store. All?! Personally, I have long ago selected threads for a big job, but they are lying around to no avail - because, as it turned out, the concept “EVERYTHING” does not include desired shade and blue canvas count. In addition, in “convenience stores” (and, let’s be honest, in some chain stores for creativity), the sellers are actually not in the know, and there is no assortment. I remember that at one time, when Burda brand stores opened in Russia, there were huge queues. There was no DMC floss, but there were well-trained salespeople who could pull out a small book from somewhere under the counter and spend half an hour helping convert color numbering from one system to another. Now I hardly know such places! In response to the prayers and curses of embroiderers, patterns began to be printed in several color systems at once.

I’ll tell you a terrible secret - in the short term it’s cheaper to buy a set. For example, for a work of average complexity of approximately 20x30 cm, you will most likely need about 30 colors (if you take the usual DMC, a skein will cost about 45-50 rubles). Multiply by 30 and get one and a half thousand (for threads only!) Yes, you can say that you will still have threads - but if embroidery is not one of your daily activities, it remains to be seen when these colors will be useful to you again. Next, the outline. A piece of canvas of this size will cost you from 70-100 to 300-400 rubles.

Hence, our first advice. Think about how dependent you are on crosses and whether it’s worth starting a lifelong journey. All my friends collect collections of patterns, the coveted complete color card, and accumulate pieces of canvas of various textures and shades.

Threads

Embroiderers embroider with floss. Floss is a thread made of cotton, usually Egyptian, which, in turn, is divided into 6 thin threads. Typically, floss is sold in skeins of 8 or 10 meters, and each skein has a number written on it, indicating the shade in the color chart of a particular manufacturer. Most magazine schemes are provided with decryption in several systems, and in Russia these are usually DMC, Anchor, Madeira and Gamma. From experience, I will say that buying threads for one project from different manufacturers is not the best idea: like foreign languages, color systems are not translated into each other “literally”.

Hence our second tip. Choose the system as your life partner - it will be with you for a long time.

Example of Anchor thread color chart

The ideal floss does not dye, does not have factory defects in the form of thickenings or knots, does not fray during operation, does not twist into a rope after every couple of stitches, is inexpensive, is available in all stores and has 500-600 shades. I’ll tell you right away: this doesn’t happen!

The closest thing to ideal is threads DMC(their main disadvantage is their high price). This is the oldest manufacturer of floss in the world: the company was founded in 1746, and floss began to be made in the 19th century. Nowadays everything is produced in China, but “made in China” does not affect the quality. DMC floss is a luxurious card of about 600 colors of the main range plus intricate additions in the form of fluorescent, melange, metallized and “vintage” (colors a la naturel) threads. DMC can be found relatively easily in most craft stores except the smallest and most budget ones. Trade via the Internet is developed, where some suppliers sell DMC floss at almost wholesale prices.

Nuances: DMC floss is smooth, silky, not prone to curling, good dense coloring. Shades of the same number vary minimally in different batches. When working with thin needles on a gauge of 16-18, the threads fray quite quickly. Important: do not lose pieces of paper with numbers - it is extremely difficult to restore the skein number by shade.

The company provides an almost century-long guarantee against fading. I don’t know if this is really so - I haven’t lived that long yet.

Anchor— the closest analogue of DMC in our market. It is much more difficult to obtain, but is often included in English sets. I can say that I often like the Anchor shades themselves even more than DMC, because the colors are very clean, rich and at the same time quite “complex” - vintage schemes look especially good with them. Like DMC, Anchor isn't cheap. In general, the pros and cons of these brands are similar to each other.

Madeira- historically the first threads that entered the Russian market, and Burda traded them. Now they may be a little harder to find than DMC, but if there is a Golden Fleece brand store nearby, Madeira will be there. Most Golden Fleece kits also come with this floss. Madeira has non-standard packaging in a spiral in a flat bag, 10 meters each, so there is more of it than DMC and Anchor - both of them have 8 meters.

Nuances: Madeira seems more matte (and cloudy) and - subjectively - thicker and harder than Anchor and DMC. Personally, my Madeira quickly becomes frayed and even torn during embroidery (maybe because I embroider very quickly). With all of the above, Madeira is not a budget floss at all.

…Personally, I am an embroidery snob. If I’m going to spend months of my life on a serious project, I don’t want to first suffer for a long time with tangled threads or mismatched shades, and then be sad over a faded or faded painting. Therefore, I will describe budget types of floss for reference. I almost never had the opportunity to work with Gamma floss, but most of my friends claim that these are the best of the cheap threads. Egyptian cotton is now also used for their production, they have a fairly large color card, and it is more or less adjusted to standard European cards. Considering that Gamma floss is half the price of DMC, this is a great option.

The gamma quickly overtook the Kirov floss in popularity, one of the most serious drawbacks of which is its limited color range. From the “new” leaders budget segment Let's note the Chinese Bestex floss, which diligently mimics DMC (but I have no desire to check what will happen to the embroidered work in a couple of years).

Over the last quarter of a century, floss threads from such brands as Mayflower, Presencia, Ariadna, Rosace, Sullivan, etc. have appeared and disappeared on the Russian market (and you may come across them). Maybe they are no worse than the market leaders, but if you seriously engage in embroidery, I I don't see much point in buying them. You still won’t be able to assemble a complete map; it’s difficult to find them on sale, and most creators of circuits and programs do not take them into account.

Tip number three. Unnamed Chinese manufacturers (no markings, cheap) should not interest us at all. Taking such floss for embroidery means saving a ruble and losing a hundred.

Tip number four: the choice of floss brand is always related to the purpose of a specific job. If you are embroidering a picture under glass or a postcard, you can easily save money by purchasing Gamma, Kirov or Bestex. If it is something more functional (pillow, towel, tablecloth, clothing decor...), I advise you to go for more expensive brands - they are better able to withstand loads and periodic washing.

Tip five. We decided to experiment - sew a sample and wash it. For samples, it is better to take blue, black, red, green colors (the most saturated and unstable). Perhaps dye fastness is generally the most important indicator of thread quality, because almost everyone has the same fiber now.

...There are a lot of letters, but in practice everything is not so scary. As soon as you have made a choice in favor of a brand, written out the numbers and purchased threads, half the battle is done. Now the question is: what to embroider on? About fabrics for counted embroidery - the second part of our review.

Fabric structure

The special finishing of the Aida fabric, which forms distinct squares, makes it easy to count the threads, and small holes in the corners of the squares make it easier to pass the needle.

Linen (or cotton) fabric with a uniform weave of threads is also used for cross stitch. As can be seen in the figure, the rather sparse structure of the fabric allows you to easily count the threads.

When cross stitching, the stitches of one cross are made exclusively in one square. At the same time, the needle is in a vertical position in relation to the canvas (the tip is facing up or down).

On tissue samples shown in enlarged form, the structure of the fabric and the position of the needle are clearly visible.

Performing a single cross

The cross stitch is formed by two diagonal stitches, which are performed in the same sequence throughout the entire work. First, a diagonal stitch is placed from left to right (bottom), and then a diagonal stitch from right to left (top). In the picture on the left, a circle marks one square of Aida fabric.

Embroidering on Aida fabric with an even number of threads

The cross stitch technique depends not only on the structure of the fabric used, but also on the number of threads - even or odd. On this page we will tell you how to start cross stitching with an even number of cotton floss threads, namely in two, four, etc. folds.

1. Thread the needle with threads, the number of which is half that which will be used for embroidery, and insert the needle into the fabric from the front side of the work at the point of crossing of the threads forming the lower left corner of the square.

2.Pull the thread to remove it from the needle.

3.Thread both ends of the thread into the needle, doubling it in this way and securing it to the fabric.

4. Start making a bottom diagonal stitch in one square of fabric.

Embroidering on linen with an even number of threads

1. Thread the needle with threads, the number of which is half that which will be used for embroidery, and insert the needle into the fabric from the front side of the work at the point where the two threads of the first square intersect.

2. Pull the thread to remove it from the needle, thread both ends of the thread into the needle, thus doubling it and securing it to the fabric. Start sewing the bottom diagonal stitch.

Embroidery on Aida fabric with an odd number of threads

Here we will tell you how to start embroidering with an odd number of threads on Aida fabric using iris No. 5 and No. 8 or cotton embroidery threads (or single-fold cotton floss threads on thin linen).

1. Thread the needle, stitch from right to left, passing the needle under the two vertical threads of the Aida square and from bottom to top under the two horizontal threads of the next square of fabric.

2. Repeat similar stitches (under the two vertical threads of the square and under the two horizontal threads) on at least three squares of the Aida fabric.

3. Insert the needle into the top left hole of the last square and out through the bottom right hole.

4. Tighten the thread so as to hide its beginning under the threads of the first square, then sew the bottom diagonal cross stitch.

Embroidering on linen with an odd number of threads

Determine the number of fabric threads (both in width and height) on which the cross will be made. The picture below shows cross stitch on a square of three threads of fabric in width and height.

1. On the front side of the work, mark under the threads corresponding to the three crosses. Bring the needle under the crossing threads in the lower left corner.

2. Tighten the thread to hide the beginning of the thread under the first basting stitch, then sew a bottom diagonal stitch, catching the indicated number of threads.

Continued work

Now let’s try to cross-stitch a small section of fabric together. As you may have noticed, the needle with the point facing up or down is always in a vertical position, maintaining the same direction throughout the row. Each stitch covers one square of Aida fabric or the same number of threads across the width and height of linen or cotton fabric.

1. Complete the first row from left to right: the needle point is pointing down.

2. Complete the second row from right to left: the needle changes direction, its point is directed upward.

3. When sewing the last stitch of the second row, turn the needle to sew the next row.

4. Continue in the same way until the desired area is filled, then use the top diagonal stitches to cover the last row completed from right to left.

5. When sewing the last stitch of a row, turn the needle to sew the next row.

6. Continue in this manner until all rows are covered with top diagonal stitches.

Upon completion of the embroidery, bring the needle to the front side of the work and pass it under the last embroidered crosses (see Fig. 1). Cut off the remaining part of the thread (see Fig. 2).

Little tricks of even crosses.

Most likely, some of you have heard about these methods, or maybe someone uses them in practice.

I hope that this information will be useful for someone.
First way embroidering even crosses called "railroad". The whole secret is that before inserting a needle and thread into the canvas, first in the desired direction, lay out a thread on a cell of the canvas, hold the thread lightly with your finger, and pierce the needle between two threads (like between rails) and then only into the hole in the canvas. This technique is good when embroidering with two threads.

When you need to embroider with threads in several layers, it is convenient to use thread controller(“trolley needle thread controller”)
They come in metal and wood. The wooden one looks like a small spindle.
I use metal and in the photo this process looks like this:

When I tighten the thread, I adjust the tension a little - I make the loop larger, then smaller and the threads line up - the stitch lies more evenly.

These are the little tricks of straight crosses

Goat seam

One of the options "velvet seam". The seam is made along the trace of two pulled out threads of fabric. Even seam strips are used as a complement to large, complex embroideries, as well as to disguise seams when joining pieces of fabric. The seam stitches are placed from left to right, making punctures in the fabric alternately along one and the other edge of the strip. The distance between the punctures should be the same. In the middle of the strip the stitches cross. Each new stitch lies on top of the previous one. These are linen, semi-linen (severe, white and colored), voile fabrics, matting, staple and silk fabric, radish (rare fabric made from linen twisted threads).

Double or "Bulgarian" cross

A double cross is made of four stitches, two of them diagonal and two straight, and is embroidered sequentially.

The needle and thread are poked out onto the front side in the upper right corner of the cage.

In artistic embroidery, to make paintings, pillows, etc., they often use another technique of making a double cross. This cross is also called “Bulgarian”.

After performing a double cross, the needle is pierced in the corner of the cage and the next double cross can be performed.

The “Bulgarian” cross is very convenient to use in those works where there are many colors and the colored areas have different configurations and locations on the surface of the fabric. When embroidering, you can first make one or two stitches (diagonally), moving horizontally or vertically, as well as “moving away” from a given colored area, and then, returning to the starting point, complement the cross with two more (straight) stitches.

Cross with horizontal stitches on the reverse side

We embroider from right to left. On the reverse side, the stitches form two horizontal lines. The top line looks like a straight stitch with a stitch length of two threads, the bottom line looks like a stem stitch, the stitches of which are twice as long as the top ones (four threads).

Technique:

We bring the needle from the wrong side to the front side two threads to the left of the exact beginning of the pattern. Count two threads to the right and two threads up and insert the needle from the front side to the wrong side (first stitch). Count two threads to the left and bring the needle from the wrong side to the right side. Count two threads down and two threads to the right - place the second knit stitch. Thus, we embroidered the first cross. From the place of the first puncture with a needle, we count two threads to the left, bring the needle from the wrong side to the front side, then insert the needle into the upper left point of the embroidered cross, count two threads to the left, bring the needle from the wrong side to the front side and stick it into the lower left corner of the embroidered cross. All the top stitches of the crosses lie in the same direction - from left to right.

Stem seam

This decorating stitch is made from left to right, counting the fabric threads in a straight line or in different directions depending on the translated design. The so-called children's patterns are embroidered with a stem stitch - figures, animals, flowers, etc., in addition, it is often used to enhance the contours of the design. The stem stitch is performed in two ways:

First way:

We sew in a straight line, that is, we always bring the needle out very close to the previous stitch. We poke the needle from the wrong side to the front side, pick up two threads horizontally, sew the first stitch, this means that we bring the needle out where the first puncture was made (where the working thread comes from). To make the work easier and to ensure that the front stitches lie in the same direction, we hold the working thread thumb left hand. We put four threads on a needle, prick it out where the first stitch ends, release the working thread under the thumb and tighten it. The stitches should be placed evenly, slanting from left to right. On the wrong side, the stitches are laid in a smooth, beautiful line.

Second way:

We stick the needle into the lower level of the stitch, and bring it out at the upper level. Thus, the stitches are laid at a greater angle, and the seam itself is more voluminous.

If we embroider each next row in the opposite direction, we get beautiful pattern in the form of a "pigtail".

I came across this master class on the Internet, which I considered useful not only for myself, but also for many handicraft lovers who keep diaries on LiRu. The author of the master class is Irina Komarkova. I present it to your attention.

Some embroiderers believe that the ideal reverse side in cross stitch is only needed when embroidering tablecloths, napkins and other things where the embroidered reverse side is easily accessible; when embroidering paintings, the reverse side will not be visible. Although in those days when the ability to embroider was mandatory for any girl, it was believed that the neat reverse side of the embroidery testifies to the accuracy and diligence of the housewife...

Master class "Ideal wrong side" - this is a description of the author’s technique, and is intended for those who want to learn not just cross stitch, but cross stitch with an ideal (or “mathematical”) reverse side, so that on the reverse side you get a kind of tapestry: All stitches are in the same direction, there are no knots or broaches.. There is another fairly widespread opinion that a perfect backside spoils the face. For the first time - yes! The second time - yes! And even the third, perhaps, too. But, as in any other business, skill comes with time, and quantity turns into quality, so with some effort and experience in embroidery, both the front side and the back side will be ideal, if the embroiderer needs it. Thus, it is not at all necessary to embroider with a perfect reverse, although it is very convenient (mistakes come out almost immediately, in addition, if you need to rip something, this process is quick and simple) and pleasant. And if you think that the wrong side should be perfect in any case, or just want to learn how to carefully embroider at least tablecloths and napkins, then this master class is for you.

In this master class, general tips and rules are given, and the technique itself is presented in pictures.

There are several difficulties that await craftswomen.

1) It will be difficult... The speed of embroidery, especially at the very beginning, drops very much. I want to give up everything and embroider with broaches, not paying attention to the reverse side of the embroidery... Thoughts will often come to mind: “The front side is neat, the stitches are all in the same direction. No one will see the backside... I won’t torture myself...” And don’t torture me if it doesn’t work , so it’s not necessary! You should enjoy embroidery.

2) It is almost impossible to embroider some things with a perfect backside. For example, embroidery on Stramin with thick acrylic threads, designs using half-crosses and other stitches, with the addition of different materials. In principle, the perfect back embroidery technique involves tapestry embroidery or cross stitch, where the entire canvas is sewn together with a cross stitch.

The master class consists of the general principles of this technique and images. You still need to try and train, without this it is somewhat difficult to explain.

In addition, do not forget thatEmbroidery is not only a result, it is a process that should be enjoyable. And this is the main point.

Embroidery technique in drawings.

We embroider not in rows, but in areas. The length of the thread, accordingly, can vary, although the most convenient thread is 70-100 cm. At the same time, before you start embroidering, “go over” the pattern with your eyes; imagine how you embroider, moving first one way, then the other. Having stitched the area “virtually”, proceed to embroidery.

First, we fill the area (or part of it) in one direction, i.e. embroider with a half cross (watch the length of the thread), then go back. There are crosses that can be embroidered only if you first put the “top” stitch and then the “bottom” stitch. In this case, on the way back, the needle and thread pass under the embroidered stitch (i.e., we follow the “neat face” rule).

It must be said that when embroidering using the “perfect reverse” method, errors are immediately visible, because if from the reverse side a stitch lies perpendicular to all the others, then it will also lie a second time, on the way back.

An example of embroidering a complex area is shown in the pictures. Black arrows indicate the direction of the stitches on the wrong side. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this area can be embroidered in a different order. For example, with the 8th cross you can embroider a cross that is located above the 7th, and not to the left of it, etc. Subsequently, the eyes themselves will see which crosses need to be embroidered and in what order. The main thing, when embroidering with a perfect reverse side, is not to forget that embroidery is often viewed from the front side, so it is much more important than the reverse side. Don't forget about the pitfalls, i.e. crosses, where the “top” stitch is embroidered first, and then the “bottom” stitch.

Rule one. We embroider in a way that suits us. From a corner or from the center - it doesn't really matter. Simply, if a piece of canvas is limited, then in order to prevent the embroidery from moving to some edge, embroider from the middle. If the canvas is marked with a grid, then you can embroider from the corner. If we embroider from a corner, then again it doesn’t matter which one - we just have to be comfortable. However, we must remember that, just like when writing, our working hand can “rub” the embroidery, thus dirtying and rubbing over already embroidered areas, so it is better to start from the upper left (or right) corner. Select a large area of the same color and start embroidering.

Rule two. We fasten the thread without knots! There are several ways to secure the thread in this way in the training course (“Cross stitch process”). At the same time, ponytails are hidden only on the face. In connection with these, a few words about the canvas. By securing the thread in this way, I came to the conclusion that Aida18, Aida 16 or Belarusian canvas (55 squares per 10 cm) is best suited for embroidery. On Aida14 canvas, the places where the thread is attached can be seen through; on Aida22, the places where the thread is attached are noticeable - the crosses are more convex. In this case, the embroidery should be dense. If you embroider with 1 thread on 16- or 18-count fabric, the tails will have to be hidden on the wrong side.
