Attention, TODAY only!

How to knit a headband? In fact, even beginners who have just discovered this wonderful world full of yarn of all kinds of shades of synthetic and natural origin can do this handmade craft. If you don't already have beautiful balls of thick thread in your craft basket, it's time to stock up on them at your local store and start your first project.

Preface

During the cold season, we all dream of wrapping ourselves in something warm and cozy. But if we can warm the body with various fur coats made of expensive furs, down jackets, parkas, sheepskin coats and coats, then in the world of hat fashion there are no special changes, and so far nothing has been invented except a thick woolen hat. Oh, how modern girls don’t like her! In fact, there is nothing pleasant about using it: it is difficult to choose a suitable style, and your hair wrinkles and loses its volume ten minutes after going outside. But if you go without cleaning, your hair will suffer greatly from low temperatures and wind. Then what to do?

A headband is a great alternative to any hat. It can be worn as an independent element, since the ears will always be protected from the vagaries of an unfavorable environment, or as part of a complex image, namely, hidden under a hood with a chic fur trim.

Advice! Before you start knitting, assess the state of your wardrobe. Remember that the color chosen for the blank must be in harmony with all outerwear. If this fails, choose several types of yarn in different shades and knit several headbands.

Secrets of creating a “minimized header”

So, you are already prepared to knit yourself an elegant headband and are in a hurry to learn the technology down to the last detail. But what needs to be done at the initial stage?

Of course, you need to choose the right materials. The product must meet certain requirements, namely, fit tightly around the head, cover the ears and forehead, without spoiling the fresh morning hairstyle and provide warmth, which is so important in winter. Therefore, the yarn you choose simply must contain natural wool or angora. Manufacturers usually indicate the proportion of natural fibers on the packaging, so make sure that this figure is at least 30 percent. Otherwise, the accessory will not perform its intended functions.

But the thickness of the threads can be any. But here, too, there is one golden rule that you must take into account: if you buy yarn with a thickness of 100 m/100 grams, the headband will turn out to be very coarse. Although some girls want to achieve exactly this effect. In other cases, the best option would be 250-300 m/100 grams.

Advice! Natural wool has a very capricious character, so strictly follow the washing recommendations. If it’s a washing machine, then only the delicate cycle, but it’s better, of course, not to be lazy and do everything yourself. This way the item will never lose its shape and color.

How to choose a pattern?

It’s hard to say how many different techniques there are today that can be used to create a headband. The experience accumulated over centuries allows us to create the most intricate patterns and weaves. But you should understand that beginners are not able to master all the techniques, so if you are picking up knitting needles for the first time in your life, practice for several days, and only then, having honed your skills, get down to the planned task.

The obvious advantage of the “half hats” we are discussing is the fact that to create them you do not need to know any complex thread weaving techniques. The patterns can be very simple, and in this article we will definitely provide you with several simple patterns. The only thing to consider is the length of the rows. It is better if they are short, that is, they are located across the product. There are also circular options, but mastering them at first is not at all easy, so we recommend adhering to the recommendations that we previously described in this section.

Advice! When knitting, try to make the loops not tight, but not too loose. Also make sure that they are the same size, otherwise instead of a pattern you will have a shapeless and incomprehensible pattern. You can also pin an original brooch in the front, sew on an applique, or decorate everything with beads and rhinestones.

The simplest models of dressings

If you want to get a simple and functional product, knit the fabric with a so-called elastic band. The ratio of knit and purl stitches is 1/1 or 2/2. The end result is a reversible piece that you can wear without the worry of accidentally wearing it inside out.

The “Honeycomb” pattern is an equally popular technique that is in demand among beginners. When forming the first row, the thickness of the yarn should be taken into account. You will need to cast on approximately 12-18 loops and form the selected pattern from level to level. After the workpiece has stretched to 50 centimeters in length, finish knitting. Sew a bandage at the back, and then to achieve an aesthetic appearance, tie the base with single crochets. This is also called the “crawfish step.” If you don’t know how to do this yet, you can leave everything as it is.

Advice!You should also learn what edge loops are. They are used to ensure that the item has smooth, regular edges. The first one is always removed, and the last one is always the front one. If you don’t do this, ugly nodules will appear along the edge.

Braid bends

Aranas, plaits, braids - all this is a definition of a technique based on loops intertwining with each other. There are dozens and even hundreds of varieties of this weaving, and you can always find a suitable option on the World Wide Web or specialized literature.

In fact, if you follow all the recommendations outlined in the patterns, knitting will not seem difficult, but rather the opposite. To begin with, of course, get your hands on creating test pieces. Some needlewomen add a third knitting needle for convenience, but this is not necessary.

Advice!Follow the instructions exactly without adding new rows. There is no need for improvisation here, because the braid must have the correct interlacing of its parts, and if you come up with something else, a disproportion will appear.

Great alternative

In this section we will make a detailed description of a technique that does not require weaving and creating braids, but at the same time they will show off on the headband. But as? Take your knitting needles, yarn, stock up on sweets and tea, turn on your favorite movie and get started!

Cast on 27 main stitches and two edge stitches. Now knit them as follows:

  • All facial;
  • K6, p15, k6.
  • Repeat row 1.
  • Repeat row 2.

The fifth and sixth steps are made according to the same principle. On the seventh row we knit six loops, then we close off fifteen, and at the next stage we create them again. To do this, simply wrap the right amount of yarn around your knitting needle or use your index finger as a second knitting needle. Next, repeat the technology from the first to the eighth row. If you do everything correctly, about two dozen horizontal holes will appear on the canvas, with the help of which the braids will be woven.

In the mid-nineties of the last century, knitted headbands that were loved by many women and worn on their heads were extremely fashionable. Then there was a long period of time when almost no one wore or knitted headbands.

Due to the cyclical nature of fashion trends these days, headbands have made a comeback, and many people like them even more than they did twenty years ago. That is why every interesting pattern, according to which an original and spectacular headband is knitted, is very popular among needlewomen.

This stylish and unusual headdress is very good in the cold season, when it protects us from wind and frost. It is especially appreciated by those of us who don’t fit or don’t like hats. Such girls use a variety of knitted headbands, which are an excellent alternative for them to a regular hat. They protect your head from the cold and your hair from destruction. We offer you some options that you will see in the attached photos.

The beauty and advantage of such a headdress is that it can be knitted with almost all known patterns. If the design of the headband or its pattern is quite complex and voluminous, then it is extremely original and stylish in itself, as in these photos. But when it is knitted in the simplest relief, it is often decorated with brooches, flowers, or bows. It is these decorative decorations that will make her stylish and elegant.

Knitting a headband should begin by choosing the color of the yarn, the desired style, patterns, and number of knitting needles. If you choose a pattern with a light and loose knitting, then you need to purchase knitting needles of a larger diameter. A dense and rigid bandage should be made with small diameter knitting needles.

When all of the above things are prepared, you can begin needlework. But first you need to take your measurements correctly, measuring your head around the circumference. When taking measurements, do not tighten, but do not loosen the meter too much.

Next, determine the knitting density vertically and horizontally by knitting a small sample measuring 10x10 centimeters (cm) with a pre-selected pattern. After the calculations, you can make a set of loops (P) on regular or circular knitting needles. Often this knitting is done on five knitting needles. In this option you will receive a model without a seam.

Master class on creating an overlapping headband

Let's consider knitting such a stylish and effective headband, associated with the overlap of two separate stripes.

Headband with a "Spike" pattern in the center

To knit such a beautiful and stylish headband, you will need one hundred grams of wool or mixed yarn, as well as number four knitting needles.

The knitting density is nineteen P and twenty-five P when knitting with stockinette stitch on a ten by ten cm pattern. For the “Spike” pattern in the lesson there is a special pattern that must be followed.

  1. At the beginning of needlework, we will make a set of thirty-three Ps on knitting needles No. 4, without tightening the loops. To make the headband voluminous, you need to knit it with a thread folded twice.
  2. Let's start knitting a headband, doing the first two Ps in garter stitch, and then move on to making the Spike pattern, which has thirteen Ps.
  3. Let's place this relief in the center, and continue to knit garter stitch along the edges of it. In this case, the central thirteen units will be occupied by the “Spike” pattern, and on each side of it ten units will be knitted in garter stitch.
  4. This needlework must be continued until the length of the headband reaches fifty-three cm.
  5. At the end of the fabric, the last two Ps must be knitted in garter stitch, as at the very beginning, and then all the Ps of the last P must be closed.

Accessory design ideas and knitting patterns

Knitted accessories are quite popular today, as they always look very impressive and profitable. And besides, hand-made knitted items often have a pronounced individuality and exclusivity. Such knitted headband with a “braid” pattern will decorate any girl’s hair and warm her in the cool season. And it is very easy and quick to knit.

First let's prepare:

  • a skein of yarn (in the master class we used red shades of yarn “Alize”, “Baby Wool” and “A-Elite”),
  • knitting needles,
  • and scissors.

Let’s get to work, starting to knit a “1 x 1 elastic band” of 27 loops in 2 threads. This is how you need to knit 5-6 rows: (photo 2).

Then all knitting (all loops) should be distributed on 3 knitting needles, or 18 loops should be moved to an additional knitting needle or pin, and only the first 9 loops should be knitted, adding one more to them. So, we knit the first strip, consisting of 10 loops, with the same “elastic band”: (photo 3).

The number of rows you need to knit will depend on the circumference of your head. So, 120-124 loops (taking into account the fact that the stripes will intertwine) need to be knitted for the head, with a circumference of 54-56 cm: (photo 4). Do not close the loops at the end.

After all three strips are connected: (photo 6),

you need to weave a regular “braid”: (photo 7).

We do this carefully so that the loops do not unravel. Do not pull it tight: (photo 8).

After this, we transfer the open loops to the knitting needle: (photo 9, 10)

and knit 6 more rows, performing several decreases. After this, the loops are closed: (photo 11).

All that remains is to sew the headband: (photo 12) and straighten it.

Overlapping headband- another option on how to keep your ears warm, but not have your whole head floating in a hat. And some people a priori do not like wearing hats, and a headband is one way out. It is knitted with a simple 2 x 2 elastic band, so all craftswomen can do it! The headband is knitted loosely, for a tighter fit it is necessary to knit fewer rows. Be sure to knit the sample with a 2 by 2 elastic band to calculate everything accurately! Our headband is suitable for a head volume of 54-58 cm.

To work you will need:

  • About 30g of Semenovskaya A-Elita quatro yarn (190m - 100g, 50% wool - 50% acrylic);
  • 2 double needles 3.5 mm;
  • Needle with a blunt end;
  • Scissors.

Video master class on knitting a headband with an overlap:

Description of the process of knitting a headband with overlapping knitting needles:

Please pay special attention that the knitting needles must be double-edged, and stocking needles are exactly what you need!

The first step is to make all the calculations. First of all, this is the knitting density, and then we begin to calculate the bandage.

  1. Determine the size of the overlap and its location. It is advisable to make an overlap of 10-15 cm. No more is necessary, as there will be a large hole in the bandage. You don’t need less - the weave will be too dense (tight).
  2. In order to change the location of the overlap, on one side you need to knit less, say 10 rows, and on the other add these same 10 rows.
  3. We determine the fit with a headband. You need to subtract from 2 to 5 cm from your volume. The more you subtract, the tighter the bandage fits.
  4. Determine the desired width of the bandage. Please note that the headband does not stretch in width on the head in the same way as a hat, or rather, it almost does not stretch at all, perhaps only a little on the ears. Our headband covers the ears completely, so its width is 8 cm.
  5. For symmetry in the bandage, you must add 2 loops. For a beautiful distribution of overlapping stripes, it is necessary that the purl loops fall on the middle 2 loops. And along the edges of the bandage it is necessary to have 2 facial loops. Rapport of the elastic itself is 4 loops (2 front and 2 purl).

So, let's start knitting a headband.

Knitting pattern for a headband:

We put 20 loops on the knitting needles + 2 loops for symmetry + 2 edge loops. Edges are not included in the description.

  • Row 1: *knit 2, purl 2* - repeat until the end of the row;
  • Row 2-52: knit according to the pattern.

We knit an overlap

On the opposite side from the beginning of the row, remove exactly half of the loops using a separate thread, pin, or whatever is at hand. Removal on a pin should occur from the front side of the knitting, i.e. in an odd row. Next, we continue to knit the half that remains on the knitting needle. The purl loop, which was in the middle of the row according to the pattern, now turns into an edge loop.

We knit 26 rows. When finished, cut the thread and transfer these loops to a pin or thread. And we transfer those loops that were left earlier onto a knitting needle (double-edged - a must). We attach the thread in the middle of the bandage, i.e. we knit starting from the middle, not from the end! And now we knit the same 26 rows.

At the end of knitting both halves, place them on top of each other, crossing them, and from the new row (you will just have a thread at the beginning of the row, you won’t have to attach anything) continue knitting the main fabric, restoring the middle 2 purl loops. We knit 52 rows again.

In the 53rd row we closed the loops according to the master class.

Now we sew our bandage. Watch our video master class for a neat seam. We carefully hide the ends in a bandage.

We hope everything worked out for you too.
